The Ahrens Family

Albert Ahrens earned his stripes in the Swartland with Lammershoek, before venturing over the seas to work in Champagne, Priorat and the Rhône Valley. He now drives 40,000km per year between vineyards, scouting for the perfect grapes to make the Ahrens Family wines at his cellar in Paarl - a spectacularly serene location beneath the Du Toitskloof mountains.

Albert produces "address specific", terroir-driven wines from all over the Cape.  Wines that, in Albert’s words, have “an address” to them, an identity wound up in the environment. His collection of address specific wines includes wines from the Swartland, Paarl, Voor-Paardeberg and Bottelary.  He convinces growers to sell him tiny amounts of their very best grapes, so while there's not much of the wine made, it comes from the finest fruit going. Furthermore, his winemaking is done as naturally as possible using only the natural indigenous yeast from the vineyards in order for the wines to embrace their own identity of their origins.  Albert also produces an MCC, with Gerrit Maritz, under the label of The House of GM & Ahrens.  Further to this, every now and again he plays around with other areas and cultivars, producing limited edition "Bendewijn", available only to members of his Bendewijn club.
